Islamic fundamentalists are already imposing their own brutal puritanism

They gathered when news broke of the imminent return from exile in London of 69-year-old Rachid Ghannouchi, the ‘moderate’ leader of Tunisia’s (previously banned) Ennahdha Islamist movement.

Ghannouchi has been careful to distance himself from the subsequent violence. But in retrospect, the women clearly had genuine cause for concern, both at his return and the simultaneous mass release of Islamists from Tunisia’s prisons — and all in the name of the country’s new pluralism.

The West, it seems to me, should be equally troubled. If these notoriously ‘moderate’ Islamists, while still a minority and in the infancy of their campaign, can hijack such a modern, sophisticated and secular Arab country in a matter of days, what could await the wider region, where secularism is already anathema and Wahhabi-inspired Islam has, in many instances, a firm foothold?

The Islamists have, through hate campaigns, set the social agenda in Tunisia even before elections have been proposed. Without a similarly assertive counterpart, there is every chance they will also fill the power vacuum being created from Cairo to Tripoli.

Egypt is the Arab world’s most populous nation, with a long tradition, like Tunisia, of tolerant and liberal Islam. The slogans on placards gave the West plenty of cause for hope, as did the westernised Egyptians who tweeted their commentary in English.

But placards are a poor proxy for the vox populi. In fact, the social decay during Hosni Mubarak’s three decades in power strongly increased the Islamists’ appeal — which Mubarak, in turn, exaggerated to keep Washington’s calls for reform at a whisper.

One month before Mubarak’s downfall, a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center found that a majority of Egyptians support stoning as a punishment for adultery, hand amputation for theft, and death for those who convert from Islam to another religion.

Sensing their moment may be nigh, the Muslim Brotherhood — harbouring a long-cherished goal of establishing an Islamist state in Egypt — is already increasing its sway in the post-revolutionary land of the Pharaohs.

Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, the fundamentalist group’s spiritual guide made famous by his weekly television show on Al Jazeera, visited Cairo recently to deliver a political sermon to a five million-strong crowd of the Egyptian faithful in Tahrir Square.

If, as seems inevitable, the Brotherhood gains sway over the government by joining in a coalition when parliamentary elections are held, it will find itself in a position to put the institutional heft of the Egyptian state behind its puritanical agenda.

This would dismay most Egyptians who, while vaguely sympathetic to the Brotherhood’s goals, for the most part have no longing to live in an Iranian-style theocracy. But neither did the Iranians before the ayatollahs took power.

As a hint of what might be in store for Egypt, consider the city of Alexandria.

Once it was a cosmopolitan summer resort famous for its secular, carefree atmosphere. Now it is about the least fun place to live in North Africa.

All Muslim women in the city are veiled — among the young, often for fear of otherwise being labelled a whore.

Violence between local Christians and Muslims is commonplace (23 Christians were killed by a bomb planted in a Coptic Orthodox church on New Year’s Day). Most bars have stopped serving alcohol, and the only women to be found on the beaches, even in the height of summer, are those taking care of their children — and they are invariably covered from head to toe in black.

It is a great mistake to assume democracy is an enemy of Islamism. When the gift of democracy is unwrapped in the Arab world, Islamists frequently spring out of the box.

The jihadis may be despised by most Muslims, but often in Arab countries, only about 20 to 40 per cent of the population vote. It is by no means impossible for the Islamists to secure a majority from the minority because their supporters are the most fanatical.

W hatever the theory of democratisation in the Arab world, the history is clear: where democracy, however tentatively, has already been introduced, it is the Islamists who have come to power.

Democracy came to Morocco, and now the fundamentalist Party for Justice and Development (PJD) increases its number of seats at each election: it is only a matter of time before the party forms a majority in parliament.

Democracy came to Gaza, and the Islamist group Hamas took power. In Bahrain, following democratic reforms a decade ago, there is now a fundamentalist Sunni block dominating the elected chamber — despite the fact that the country’s population is 70 per cent Shia.

Ditto Yemen. Even in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood was officially outlawed, the group won a quarter of the parliamentary seats up for grabs six years ago.

But the Islamists seldom want to take control of the government machine; they have little interest in setting tax or energy policy. The influence they seek is cultural totalitarianism.

Bereft of sensible — let alone practical — solutions to the real ills that plague their societies, they aim to Islamise society from below. And principally by tackling a subject close to everyone’s heart: sex.

The events in Tunisia are merely an echo of what has been happening in the region for a decade. In Yemen, Islamists have long since been busy raiding alleged brothels and campaigning against all other forms of what they denounce — wrongly — as imported western decadence.

In Bahrain, too, the Islamists have explicitly dedicated themselves to clamping down on prostitution and the sale of alcohol.

In Tunisia and Egypt, the Islamists have quickly ruled out running for the all-important presidency. They do not seek to lead a government, because with that power comes responsibility and accountability.

What they need is a government sufficiently biddable to allow them to impose their cultural tyranny — and to succeed, they don’t need majority support. All the Islamists require is to be louder, more forceful and better organised than their opponents.

It would be foolish to argue that Arabs are somehow incapable of stable democratic government. There is, indeed, a chance that they are setting out on a turbulent path to a brighter future, free from repressive dogma.

But in a region that confounds analysts’ predictions on a daily basis, only one thing can be said with certainty: it is far too soon to declare any kind of triumph.

Explosion of a suspicious package at the Iranian embassy in London

A suspect package mailed to the Iranian embassy's consular section in London went off outside the building on Friday with bomb disposal experts present at the scene, Press TV reported.

Eyewitnesses told the Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency (IRNA) that the consular section staff who spotted the suspicious package immediately moved it out of the building as they informed the police.

The police cordoned off the nearby streets while bomb disposal experts were trying to defuse the device, but witnesses said the parcel blew up outside the building after several hours.

Those present at the scene also said the device was apparently a percussion bomb, which went off in an uncontrolled explosion. They said the blast did not leave any injury or damage.

This is while police said they carried out a controlled explosion on the suspect package, though it may not have contained any explosives.

The package was delivered on Friday to Iran's consular section, which is located in the west London Kensington district a few streets away from the Iranian embassy.

As usual I haven't been able to find this in any mainstream newspaper...

‘Ambassador of Death’ – Ahmadinejad unveils Iran’s long-range bomber drone

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today unveiled a long-range bomber drone he described as an 'ambassador of death' to Tehran's enemies.

State television footage showed the president applauding as a blue cloth covering the drone - known as Karar or 'assailant' in Persian - was removed to reveal the aircraft marked 'bomber jet'.

It comes as Iran began to load nuclear fuel into its first nuclear power plant at Bushehr.

The broadcast also showed the aircraft in flight and Iranian Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said the drone has a range of 620 miles.

'This jet, before it heralds death for enemies, is the messenger of salvation and dignity for humanity,' Mr Ahmadinejad said in his speech at the unveiling at Tehran's Malek Ashtar university.

He said the drone had 'a main message of peace and friendship' but was intended to deter aggression 'and keep the enemy paralysed in his bases'.

The drone was built to 'carry and fire four stealth cruise missiles... and, depending on the mission, it can carry two bombs of 250lbs each or a precision missile of 500lbs,' state television reported.

Mr Ahmadinejad said Iran's defence abilities 'should reach a point where we can cut off the aggressor's arm before he acts, and if we miss, we should destroy him before he hits the target.'

'The main message of Karar bomber is to prevent any kind of aggression and conflict against Iran,' he added.

The Karar was unveiled on Iran's annual Defence Industry Day, and two days after the Islamic republic test-fired a domestically built surface-to-surface missile - the Qiam.

Iran is expected to follow up with a series of military announcements as the nation also marks 'government week', a period which Tehran uses to tout its achievements.

The country is also expected to test-fire a third generation Fateh 110 missile, after having already paraded a version with a range of up to 125 miles.

The production lines of two missile-carrying speedboats, Seraj and Zolfaqar, are also due to be inaugurated.

Karar's unveiling came days after Iran took delivery of four domestically-built Ghadi mini-submarines, a 'stealth' vessel designed to operate in shallow waters such as the Gulf.

The U.S and Israel have not ruled out military action over Iran's controversial nuclear programme.

The Bushehr plant, which is being monitored by the UN's nuclear watchdog, is not believed to pose a proliferation threat because Russia is supplying the nuclear fuel and will remove the spent fuel rods.

Iran is under UN sanctions to force it to halt uranium enrichment because of fears that it secretly plans to build nuclear weapons. It has denied the allegations.

Israel has 3 days to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons

Israel has just days to launch a military strike and stop Iran from developing a nuclear bomb, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations has warned.

The deadline was set by outspoken former envoy John Bolton, who claimed that time was running out for the West to crush Tehran’s atomic ambitions.

He said Iran is planning to bring its first Bushehr reactor online on Saturday, when a shipment of nuclear fuel will be loaded into the plant’s core.

At that point, he said it would be too late for Israel to attack the facility because it would spread radiation and affect innocent Iranian civilians.

‘Once that uranium, once those fuel rods are very close to the reactor, certainly once they’re in the reactor, attacking it means a release of radiation, no question about it,’ said Mr Bolton.

‘So if Israel is going to do anything against Bushehr it has to move in the next eight days,’ he told Fox News in the U.S.

If the Israelis fail to act, Mr Bolton said: ‘Iran will achieve something that no other opponent of Israel, no other enemy of the United States in the Middle East really has and that is a functioning nuclear reactor.’

But the former diplomat, who served as George Bush’s ambassador to the UN between 2005 and 2009, said he doubted Israel would attack Iran.

‘I’m afraid that they have lost this opportunity,’ he added.

Israel to attack Iran?

Israel is massing warplanes in the Caucasus for an attack on Iran, it was revealed yesterday.

Preparations are underway to launch the military attack from Azerbaijan and Georgia, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej, quoting military sources.

Israel was, in fact, training pilots in Turkey to launch the strike and was smuggling planes into Georgia using Turkish airspace, they said.

However, Turkey was unaware of Israel’s intention of transferring the planes to Georgia, the sources said.

The unexpected crisis between Israel and Turkey following an Israeli commando raid on an aid flotilla bound for Gaza Strip hit Israeli calculations.

Azerbaijan-based intelligence units, working under the cover of technicians, trainers and consultants, have helped with the preparations, the sources said.

Military equipment, mostly supplied by the US, was transported to a Georgian port via the Black Sea.

Georgian coastguard and Israeli controllers are co-operating to hide the operations from Russian vessels, said the sources.

They point out that according to Israel, it will not be in a position to launch a strike on Iran without using bases in Georgia and Azerbaijan due to the limited capabilities of its nuclear submarines stationed near the Iranian coast.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Press TV reported that a very large contingent of US ground forces had massed in Azerbaijan, near the Iranian border. The independent Azerbaijani news website Trend confirmed the report.

Those reports came just days after the Pentagon confirmed that an unusually large fleet of US warships had indeed passed through Egypt’s Suez Canal en route to the Gulf. At least one Israeli warship reportedly joined the American armada.

Press TV also quoted Iranian Revolultionary Guard Brigadier General Mehdi Moini as saying that the country’s forces are mobilised and ready to face Israelli and American “misadventures” near its borders.

* Iran last night said it has cancelled plans to send an aid ship to the Gaza Strip as Israel “had sent a letter to the UN saying that the presence of Iranian and Lebanese ships in the Gaza area will be considered a declaration of war on that regime and it will confront it,” Irna said.

Jihadist Group Trying to 'Invade' Facebook Gets Shut Down

A quickly growing jihadist group that used Facebook to spread its radical message has been shut down by the popular Web networking site after FOXNews.com alerted the company to the group's activities.

Facebook blocked the group, Fursan Ghazawat Alnusra — Arabic for "Knights in Support of the Invasion" — Thursday evening after the group swelled to about 120 members in just over one week.

The group had been exhorting its members to wage "Jihad to aid the religion of Allah and his Prophet."

FOXNews.com, working closely with a former radical Muslim now dedicated to exposing cyberterror activity, was able to gain access to the group and its content.

Fursan Ghazawat Alnusra wrote that its purpose was "to support Jihad and Mujihadeen" and that it started the Facebook group "to invade this Web site" and to ask "Allah to grant us Jihad and martyrdom."

It promised future action: "Today we invade your sites, tomorrow your lands and homes, o you cross worshippers."

The site's contents included three graphic videos:

— A so-called "martyr" statement from a soon-to-be homicide bomber;

— An Islamic militant, just before dying in battle, asking others to position him for proper prayer to bless his actions.

— A purported Egyptian "traitor" being beheaded on camera because he was accused of helping Americans in Iraq.

A few members of the group posted photos to identify themselves, known as profile pictures, that included well known members of Al Qaeda's leadership as well as prominent Saudi clerics.

One of the group's founders, who called himself Omar Abdel Hakeem, after the Syrian cleric who wrote the book on how to instruct Al Qaeda followers to use technology, wrote a mission statement to inspire "Jihad" against "the cross worshippers," or Christians:

"Maybe the day will come when one of the martyrs is asked [by Allah] who urged you to Jihad, so he answers saying: a message came to me from Facebook asking me to support the Mujihadeen. The message impacted me therefore I went to Jihad to destroy the places of the cross worshippers."

Jarret Brachman, a freelance cyberterror expert who formerly was director of research in the Combating Terrorism Center at the United States Military Academy, called the group's members "Ji-hobbyists" — users who may be passionate about Al Qaeda's teachings but were unlikely to take violent action.

"They're very knowledgeable and serious. They know the movement, and are using Facebook, not so much to plan an attack, but to propagate a message," Brachman said.

FOXNews.com contacted Facebook on Thursday seeking information about Fursan Ghazawat Alnusra. A few hours later, Facebook yanked the site. A similar group with the same content appeared briefly Friday and was taken down within minutes.

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said the group is now disabled and that the company is investigating the group's "friends," and may take further action.

He said Facebook has taken steps to increase monitoring for content supporting terrorism, but he said such actions are difficult.

"Facebook is a start-up of 800 people with a user base of over 140 million," Schnitt said. "Certainly anything that supports violence is at the top of our monitoring list."

Though radical Islamic groups like Al Qaeda are pioneering uses of the Internet to train, share ideas and organize, cyber experts said the the most threatening Jihadists are reluctant to use sites like MySpace and Facebook.

"There is a major vulnerablility in using these sties. It is just an open way to support their movement," said Brachman.

To protect identities, members of Fursan Ghazawat Alnusra were told to use fake names and new e-mail accounts to avoid detection. Most of the discussions were carried out in Arabic, and there was an explicit appeal made for members who speak English, in order to help with English-language propaganda.

It was unclear how many members were based in the United States, although several members claimed to be Americans. According FOXNews.com's source who regularly monitored the group's discussions throughout the week, at least several of the members appeared to be American because of their writing style.

On Monday, the group announced on Facebook that it had created a formal structure of seven "battalions," responsible for duties ranging from spreading religious materials to military knowledge.

It claimed that three of the seven "battalions" had started recruiting, and communication among those individuals could continue even if the Facebook group were to shut down.

"We can't know if these are sophisticated actors capable of coordinating or assisting attacks or if these are just attention-seekers," warned terror expert David Draper of the Nine/Eleven Finding Answers (NEFA) Foundation. "But just having the propaganda available for impressionable youths to find at Facebook is dangerous in and of itself."

That idea seemed to be echoed by one Fursan Ghazawat Alnusra founding member, who identified himself as AboLbaraa Alshamy. He wrote:

"90% of this war is propaganda war.... Therefore those of us who are not in the real Jihad need to engage in this propaganda war."

Experts agree that moves by Facebook and other Internet companies to shut down the group do little. Members of the now-disbanded Fursan Ghazawat Alnusra could form a similar group on another social networking site or even again on Facebook.

They say that to avoid detection, groups like this know now know to strip out words that get their posts flagged, enabling them to get their message out to impressionable young Muslims.

"Propaganda doesn't need to have overt support for violence or terrorism in order to inspire someone to become a terrorist," Draper said.

islam v Wilders (Parliament) Remix

And the "moderates" then complain that we see them as a nuisance at best and the bloody anti-Christ at worst!?!

Islam is long overdue a reformation. We have had enough of this. Now the reasons me uploading this are easy.

To the Police and other 'Protectors' - PROTECT US - prevent crime from happening for once!

To the Polichickens - expel ALL Islamic appeasing MPs, Lords, even the poxy cleaners if needs be.

To the EDL - have a pro-democracy march, not an anti-islam - see the press put that in their pipe and smoke it.

To the Press - report the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! You had he expenses details a lot longer than some bloggers. We know your hand in hand but when we have to turn to foreign stations, it doesn't instil calm.

To the 'moderate muslims' - where are you?

To the extremist-inbred-foolish-knobs, you want Islamic Law, sod off to Iran. And anyone asking me to understand them can go do one! I'm not interested in building bridges with savages.

And lastly to all Britons. Let's vote out the traitors who allowed this to happen. Let's leave the EU, the UN and even NATO if we have to . We have to look after ourselves first and foremost. Let us be a shining example to the world, not a shining beacon open to all and sundry.

I was happy enough to do another Roar remix but no, these degenerate-Islamic-knob-jockeys had to come along and spoil another weekend. Why I added the tracks and dubb'd it up.

Email the Police - help me tell them to pull their finger out.
