Arab country wins 2022 World Cup bid?

While I can understand Russia winning the bid to host the 2018 World Cup I just can't understand why Qatar won the 2022 bid, or even why they placed a bid in the first place.

77.6% of the population of Qatar is muslim and according to islamic hard-liners football is a definite no-no. Apparently they don't like the shorts!

It is not so long ago that two muslims were killed and 35 others were arrested by Hizbul Islam for watching the 2010 World Cup in Somailia.

In Malaysia muslims have been ordered not to wear football shirts with images of crosses, liquor brands or devils as they 'offend allah'.

What the hell is a muslim Arab country doing even bidding? It just doesn't make sense to me.

They are bloody useless at football (as the video above shows) and never in their 'footballing' history have they qualified for a World Cup. In fact football was only introduced into the area by oil workers around 60 years ago with the Qatar Football Association being formed in 1970.

After winning their bid today, their representative stated that after hosting the World Cup they would dismantle the football stadiums and ship them out to other countries.

Why? Why on earth would you take years to build something that costs millions only to dismantle it a few weeks later and give it away?

This is a question I am still pondering.

Answers on a postcard please...
