Defiant residents stop gipsy invasion by digging trenches and taking to the streets

Housing estate residents went to drastic lengths to stop invading gipsies - by digging trenches and taking to the streets to prevent access.

Eventually, police were forced to intervene as simmering tensions between travellers and tenants threatened to boil over amid the scenes of mayhem.

A dozen squad cars descended on the estate in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, where scores of angry locals fetched spades and dug a trench across the access road to stop caravans entering a nearby field.

During the battle, which followed weeks of increasing friction, resident Mandy Greenshields claimed a traveller vehicle tried to ram her car after she used it to block off the entrance.

Others said they were abused by gipsies and only police intervention stopped the dispute from turning to violence.

Miss Greenshields took direct action after watching three caravans enter the land owned by South Derbyshire District Council.

She said: ‘I tried to block them off by parking my car in front of the entrance, but one of them in another vehicle made as if to ram me. Then the police turned up.

‘Everybody was in uproar and it looked as though there was going to be a fight at one point because the travellers were urging the residents on. If the police hadn't got here, things would have got out of hand.’

Two further caravans managed to get onto the field via a different entrance, before the travellers left - to cheers from residents -after more than two hours of negotiations with police.

Karen Collier said: Police had blocked the road off and there were queues of people trying to get in to get home. It was absolutely manic. There were police cars everywhere.

‘We all came out as a community because we don't want the travellers here. We wouldn't mind if they were the old-style gipsies who cleaned up after themselves, but the mess they leave and the abuse you get from them is terrible.’

Sergeant Adrian Pegg, from Derbyshire Constabulary, said: ‘Our officers met a group of very angry residents determined that the travellers were not going to stay there.

‘Police attended to prevent a breach of the peace, as we have no powers to remove travellers once they have accessed land.’

Police parked one of their vehicles in front of the second entrance to the site to prevent the travellers returning, and were yesterday due to discuss the issue with the district council, to see if permanent barriers could be erected.

Meanwhile, residents were due to hold a meeting in the street last night to discuss the problem, with police and council officers expected to attend.

Immigrant gang molest 14 year old girl and get off scot free

A girl of 14 from Coventry in the West Midlands has been molested by eight Slovakians aged between eight and twelve as she walked to her friend’s house.

The incident was reported to police, the girl identified the boys from a line-up and the case was handed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), who promptly dropped the case for ‘not being of public interest’.

I would like to know why it’s not in the public’s interest to charge a gang of immigrant boys for their molestation of a 14 year old girl.

I am a member of the public and you can bet your bottom dollar that I am interested in seeing these
Scumbag’s charged, sentenced and then deported along with their families.

What kind of country are we living in when you can be in trouble for selling a goldfish to a child and yet get away with offences that are far more serious?

What kind of Government creates laws that favour the criminal and not the victim?

It’s time people woke up and voted in a party that gives criminals a tough time with REAL sentences and give victims what they deserve – JUSTICE!

You can forget Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrats and UKIP; they all pee in the same pot.

It’s time to vote into power a REAL party with REAL values – The British National Party!

Gypsy rights campaigner's benefits scam

A campaigner for Roma gipsies' rights has been charged with helping scores of Romanians illegally claim millions in benefits.

Lavinia Olmazu, 30, and her boyfriend Alin Enachi, 29, are said to have masterminded a scam by which 172 Romanians claimed £2.6million.

Olmazu, who was arrested last week, was working as an 'inclusivity outreach worker' to Roma gipsies for both Haringey and Waltham Forest councils in North London.

The academic, who has campaigned for greater understanding of gipsy culture, is accused with Enachi of using a supposedly charitable organisation called Roma Concern to help coordinate the fraud.

The couple appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday alongside six gipsies, each of whom is alleged to have pocketed thousands of pounds from the scam.

Under rules introduced when Romania joined the EU in 2006, Romanian migrants cannot get a National Insurance number - which is the key to getting benefits - unless they can prove they have paid employment lined up.

Olmazu and her boyfriend are accused of giving unemployed Romanians false documentation which purported to offer them work. They are also said to have provided false invoices and references purportedly showing they were working.

Scores then used fraudulently obtained NI numbers to claim child benefit, working tax credit and child tax credit, the court heard.

The fraud was allegedly facilitated by Enachi, who attended Benefits Agency interviews with Romanians as a translator.

Police tell car theft victim: 'We've found your van... but it's too dangerous to get it back from traveller camp'

When a market trader was told by police his stolen Mercedes van had been found, he was overjoyed.

But Christopher Sims was amazed when an officer said it had been located in a ‘no-go’ on a notorious travellers caravan site.

A police officer explained they were unable to retrieve his £1,000 vehicle - which had £1,000 worth of goods inside - because it would mean a major operation which would put officers' lives at risk.

One officer accidentally let slip that the van is on a travellers site, The Willows, at Sandhurst, near Gloucester.

The father-of-three said: 'She told me it is a very dangerous and volatile place for the police to go.

'She said they would have to mount a huge operation with armed officers, dogs and helicopters and it would never be authorised by senior officers for the sake of a van worth £1,000 with another £1,000 worth of contents inside it.

'I think it's disgusting. It's one law for them and one for us. I feel so frustrated and angry.'

Mr Sims, of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was visited by two officers 24 hours after reporting the vehicle stolen on February 12.

He said his jaw dropped when they told him they had an idea who might have stolen it but could not take any action.

‘They said they were sympathetic but said that because of the situation they couldn’t risk putting officers’ lives at risk,’ he said.

‘One of the officers said it was not a “no-go” area, but if they did go they would have to go in mob-handed.’

Mr Sims, who uses his van for taking goods between car boot sales, said ‘shifty looking’ strangers had approached him three times offering to buy the vehicle before it was stolen.

On the second occasion, he said, he noted down the registration number of their Transit van.

‘The one guy was right in my face waving a wad of cash and saying they wanted my van for spare parts,’ Mr Sims said.

When his van disappeared he immediately told police about his mysterious visitors and handed over the details.

‘Then the next evening I get a visit from these two officers,’ he said.

‘They sat me down and told me they have checked out the registration number and it is registered to someone known to the police.

‘But they say they can’t go there without organising a proper operation. They said it was dangerous.’

Mr Sims said he was later called on by two more officers who promised him they were looking into the case properly.

Yesterday, he said, he was visited by a ‘rookie’ WPC who let slip to him that the van is believed to be at the Willows site.

‘She very proudly told me that she has walked round there three times on her own without any trouble,’ Mr Sims said.

‘Well, if that's the case, why can't they go and make enquiries there about my van and arrest the people responsible?

‘It makes me laugh that the police have put out appeals recently for information about someone having a stone thrown at their car or a banner being stolen from outside an office yet they won't do anything about me having my livelihood stolen.

‘Direct Line have told me my policy does not cover me for theft so it looks like I have lost everything just because the police won't help me,’ he added.

A Gloucestershire police spokesman denied today that the force has ‘no-go’ areas and issued statement, stating: ‘There is currently an ongoing investigation into the theft of a white Mercedes panel van.

‘All reports of vehicle thefts are taken very seriously and this incident is being investigated thoroughly.

‘We would like to make it very clear that we do not classify any areas as “no-go zones” and that we follow all leads of enquiry appropriate to our investigation.

Jeweller told to remove 'racially offensive' sign from shop

Jeweller, Michael Plant has been given a police warning for ‘racially offensive’ conduct after placing a sign in his shop window reading 'Sorry, we do not serve Eastern Europeans or Gypsies.’

Mr Plant of Altrincham in Cheshire, who has run the3 shop for the [past 22 years has been told to take the sign down or face prosecution for race hate crime. Mr Plant who has been targeted by foreign thieves, reported to be Romanian travellers, said:

I'm not racist, but the fact is I have been targeted repeatedly by Eastern European criminals and I should have a right to say which people come into my shop and not face allegations of racial discrimination.

I should be able to choose who I serve. That's not just Eastern Europeans - if someone comes in drunk they will not be served either.

All I want is some common sense approach to what we have. The police are reactive rather than proactive to crime, they wait for it to happen before they solve it rather than the other way round.

I think these Romanians and Eastern European criminals are letting their fellow countrymen down. Obviously I don't think all of them are bad, but how can I distinguish who is good and who is bad?

I've got a foreign wife and we have foreign friends. But some people coming in to this country illegally seem to have more rights than me.

He went on to say:

They always say they're Spanish, but they aren't. I speak more Spanish than them!

They use distraction techniques like a child running around, and they get away with your stock. One morning I lost nine bracelets, worth well into four figures.

I think they must pass our name around because about every five to six weeks I get another group of people, two or three to four, sometimes with or without children.

Their English is very poor. They always have gold teeth.
The men always dress very flamboyant with suits, they look as if they are trying to fit in with pointy shoes on, but unfortunately they go over the top and fail.

They come in and ask for something and we usually haven't got it. Last Saturday we got a visit from another 'disadvantaged' pair from a 'disadvantaged' group and the result was that we lost some jewellery to them.

I've reported incidents to the police in the past. I've had several robberies over the years and the capture of criminals is very low.

I'm sick and tired of a country where if I put a sign on the door, I'm told I'm in flagrant disregard of the discrimination act, which would result in me going to high court being given a fine and a slap on the wrist and end up with a criminal record.

I bet if these people are caught for stealing, they probably wouldn't even go into a magistrates court. They would just get a fixed penalty fine and that would be paid by one of the human rights organisations. The tax-payer pays for it all.

I've spoken to various people, including foreign friends of mine, and they seem to agree that the whole country is belly-up.

They're quicker than Paul Daniels. It's a couple of hundred pounds (each time) and that's under my insurance excess.

Police said the Mr Plant had fallen foul of the Race Relations Act which recognises gypsies and travellers as ethnic groups.

Well, Mr Plant, your words speak for us all. Stick to your guns and keep that sign flying high!
