Poppy Day service anger

St. Alkmund's, Duffield

The Remembrance Day service at St. Alkmund’s Church in Duffield will not be easily forgotten.

Among the 200 strong gathering were several marines and soldiers who, if not for the fact they were in full uniform, would have walked out of the service.

And rightly so!

Preacher, Mr Lindop, chose to portray our brave boys as ‘inhuman’.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS - 17/07/09

Six hundred soldiers from Colchester Garrison will parade through the town on Friday, 17 July, with drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed in what promises to be a spectacular event.

The celebrations recognise 16 Air Assault Brigade’s Freedom of the Borough, granted by Colchester Borough Council in appreciation of the public service they provide to the people of the borough.

Troops will parade along East Hill and the High Street, which will be followed by a civic reception at the Town Hall.

Colchester’s Mayor, Cllr Henry Spyvee said: “We have formed a very strong bond with the Brigade since it has been based in Colchester, and this will be a great chance for the town to show its appreciation of the job our soldiers do. I encourage everyone to come along and celebrate with us.”

East Hill will be closed to traffic in both directions, from the High Street to Guildford Road, from 9.15am on the day of the parade.

From 10.15am, North Hill and Head Street will be closed. The one-way system in Priory Street will be reversed, to allow vehicles to exit the car park.

Programme of events/road closures:

9.15am East Hill closed to traffic in both directions. Traffic coming from High Street will be directed down Queen Street. Castle Road, Roman Road and the exit from Priory Street will also be closed.

10.15am North Hill closed in both directions. Head Street will be closed.
The one-way system in Priory Street will be reversed to allow vehicles to exit the car park and road.

10.45 am civic party to process outside for march past.

11.00 am march past commences led by Deputy Brigade Commander, and Parachute Regiment Band.

11.15am East Hill reopened to traffic as will Castle Road and Roman Road. The reversal of the one-way system in Priory Street will be cancelled.

12:30am as soon as safety allows, North Hill will be re-opened to traffic and the remaining lane of Head Street will be re-opened.

12.45 pm presentation of Illuminated Council Resolution and speech by Mayor followed by reply from Brigade Commander.
