English-speaking pupils now the minority in 1,500 British schools

Children who speak English as their first language are a minority in more than 1,500 schools, official figures have revealed.
They show there has been a sharp rise in the number of schools in England where more than half of pupils have a foreign language as their mother tongue.

The statistics released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families show that in 1997, the year Labour came to power, half the pupils in 866 schools spoke English as a second language.

By last year, this figure had jumped to1,545 - a rise of 78 per cent. It means that more than half the pupils in 1,284 primary schools, 210 secondary schools and 51 special schools across England now come from a non-English speaking background.

Around one in seven - almost 500,000 - primary pupils and just over one in ten, or 364,000, secondary students do not speak English as their first language.

Critics said last night that the figures were another sign of the impact of Labour's open door on immigration and that they risked hampering integration.

They also claimed that the data has serious implications for already-stretched school resources.

The statistics also reveal that the impact of immigration has not been spread evenly across the country. London - often the first point of call for immigrants - has been the hardest hit.

Birmingham has 116 schools where more than 50 per cent of pupils have English as a second language, while in Bradford the figure is 60, in Leicester 34, Manchester 33, Lancashire 30, and Kirklees 30.

BNP teachers will not be banned

Mr Balls said he wanted to know if the current situation struck "the right balance between allowing independent schools autonomy, operating in accordance with their ethos and values, and protecting the young people attending those schools from teachers displaying racist or intolerant views or behaviours that could be harmful".

He said there was "no place for racism in our schools" but that the report made it clear that incidences of teachers promoting racism were "extremely rare".

Mr Balls said last year he wanted this review to see if there were sufficient powers available "to keep racism and BNP activity out of schools".

British National Party leader Nick Griffin said at the time his members were victims of "political oppression".

Racist remarks

The NASUWT union, which has campaigned to have BNP members banned from schools, said it was disappointed by the review's findings.

General secretary Chris Keates said the report was "an opportunity that's been missed" to bring teachers into line with police and prison officers.

"The idea that a person who signs up to membership of the BNP can simply leave these beliefs at the school gate and behave as a 'professional' when they walk into school is risible, " said Ms Keates.

"The report is woefully inadequate and littered with contradictions."

She said too much attention was paid to the number of incidents in schools, saying "one incident is one too many".

Only six incidences of BNP membership by members of the teaching profession or governors were brought to the attention of the Department for Children, Schools and Families in six years, the report said.

It also found only nine incidents where teachers making racist remarks or holding racist materials had been referred to the General Teaching Council for England.

But the Association of School and College Leaders welcomed the findings.

Its general secretary Dr John Dunford said: "Of course people with racist views should not be working with young people in schools. However, it is much less clear that there should be a blanket regulation on the issue.

"The aim should be genuinely to challenge young people to think for themselves and to form their own opinions rather than to promote a particular ideology."

The review into independent schools will report in September.

Our failed education system

Can you remember that Blair chap?

You know, the one who in 1997 in one of his speeches went on about education, education, education.

He also wanted those from the poorer families to get into universities to give them a better start in life.

But really he didn't mean it, so what he did to prevent them from going to university?

He charged them tuition fees.

That is what I call one big con.

This Government has been a disaster with our children’s education and future.

For years the C.B.I. have been complaining about the standard of the education, which sadly fell on deaf ears. Now, as highlighted by the chairman of M&S, Sir Stuart Rose, we are paying the price.

Millions of school leavers are not fit for work, and many don’t even have the basic grasp of the three R’s.

It was only a few weeks ago that Tesco chief executive, Sir Terry Leahy, called the education system woeful.

The basic foundation for education is the three R’s. It always has been and always will be.

This is the kind of education Pol Pot wanted for his people; an illiterate society.

BNP in the workplace

I have been sending emails back and forth with a new found friend just lately. and today we were discussing our jobs. Rather than write a long essay on the idiots in charge of our children I thought it would be simpler to get a view from the horses mouth.

So here it is...

I work in a primary school. I'm just a minion of a support worker, but have to keep my mouth shut about the BNP. There's a poster in the staff room headed 'Stop the BNP' and a link to an on-line petition to stop members/supporters of the party from becoming teachers or serving on the board of Govenors.

This poster states there is no place in the education system for fascist, right wing views. I fume every time I look at the damn thing.

In the infant hall, there's a mural (very beautfully made, it must've taken ages) dedicated to Islam. A paper-mache mosque, pictures of Muslims in traditional dress, prayer mats, the Qu'ran etc.

I asked the school receptionist when were they adding the pics of stonings, floggings and beheadings.. she pissed herself laughing, but told me to 'sssssh'.

I hate to be a hypocrite and not speak out, but I can't lose my job.. my man's business it almost on its knees as the Asians have all but taken over completely.

The headmaster of the school is a decent bloke from an ordinary family and really cares about the kids.. but I hear he's a tyrant when it comes to 'racist abuse' so what can do?

My advice? Keep your nose clean and get on with the job... for now. Because there will come a day when we won't have to hide our political views. We will be able to hold our heads up high and say...

TEACHERS WILL NOT ALLOW OUR CHILDREN TO BE PATRIOTIC

Those of you who know me know I am snowed under with work, so for the time being I will be adding relevant news articles to my blog. I just haven't the time at the moment to write articles.

Todays first is about our school teachers. They have been brainwashed by our government to be non-patriotic and to hate anything British. As the government realise the British people have had enough of being treated as second class citizens they are trying to reverse their teachings in the hope of holding on to office. They haven't a hope in hell.

Three-quarters of teachers in Britain's schools believe they should warn pupils about the dangers of patriotism - which some regard as a form of 'brainwashing', researchers have found.

A nationwide study found the majority of teachers felt they should not be promoting the subject at all in the classroom, with some preferring to instruct their pupils in the benefits of 'universal brotherhood'.

And even those who felt positively about patriotism felt the need to qualify and tone down their support, stressing that they disliked 'jingoistic flag-waving'.

Curriculum controversy: Many teachers claim to feel uncomfortable promoting patriotism

The findings are a blow for the Government after Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke out in favour of encouraging pupils to be patriotic, calling for 'Britishness' lessons to be part of the curriculum.

The study by the Institute of Education at the University of London surveyed teachers and pupils at 20 secondary schools, and found 74 per cent believed it was their duty to point out the danger of patriotic sentiments

'Praising patriotism excludes non-British pupils,' one teacher told researchers.

'Patriotism about being British divides groups along racial lines, when we aim to bring pupils to an understanding of what makes us the same.'

Other responses included:

• 'We shouldn't be promoting patriotism. We should be promoting universal brotherhood.'
• 'I think we should identify as humans.'
• 'I don't think you should be grooming children to be patriotic. That's as bad as telling everyone that they've got to be a certain religion - I am not going to brainwash anyone.'

While two-thirds of teachers claimed they encouraged discussion of patriotism in their classrooms, more than half of pupils said patriotism was never discussed at school.

In their report, Dr Joanne Pearce and Dr Michael Hand argue much of history and politics is incomprehensible without understanding of the power of patriotic sentiment.

They told the Times Educational Supplement: 'Schools have a responsibility to ensure that students not only understand the phenomenon of patriotism, but are equipped to make reasoned judgments about the place it should occupy in their own emotional lives.'

British author Frederick Forsyth said teachers should promote 'quiet pride' amongst students

Novelist and commentator Frederick Forsyth said: 'I wish these teachers would see that patriotism in the sense of that quiet pride is nothing to be afraid of. It's not aggressive. It doesn't put down foreigners. It doesn't noisily wave flags and it certainly doesn't swerve towards the BNP.'

There's nothing wrong with the BNP. It's about time time more people realised what we British are up against and did something about it.

Tackling Knives Action Programme - FAILURE

Reports on the news today say that Jaquie Smith's multimillion pound 'Tackling Knives Action Programme' has failed as yet another youngster is stabbed to death.

Vernon Croaker, Schools Minister defends the 'Tackling Knives Action Programme' by saying:

'if we look at the overall numbers of knife related violence, we see that down by 17%, and if you actually look at the number of murders in that age group (under 20's) rather than all ages the number of murders are stable there and there are good signs that that will improve as we move forward'

What does he mean 'stable'? Millions of pounds have been wasted on a project that obviously doesn't work.

If we look at the facts, we see that in the year following the start of the tackling knives action programme, the number of over twenties killed went up by 7%, from 96 - 103.

In the under twenties, youngsters killed by a knife or sharp object did not change, despite the operation in ten areas.

Between July 2007 and March 2008, twenty three knife related deaths occured.

Between July 2008 and March 2009, twenty three under 20's were killed.

In London knife crime was down from 754 in last three months of 2007 compared with 657 in last three months of 2008, but in the Thames Valley, Nottingham and Greater Manchester, knife crime rose.

The scheme is set to be taken up by six other police forces and will focus on 13 -24 year olds
