Christian preachers face arrest in Birmingham

A police community support officer ordered two Christian preachers to stop handing out gospel leaflets in a predominantly Muslim area of Birmingham.

The evangelists say they were threatened with arrest for committing a "hate crime" and were told they risked being beaten up if they returned. The incident will fuel fears that "no-go areas" for Christians are emerging in British towns and cities, as the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester, claimed in The Sunday Telegraph this year.

Arthur Cunningham, 48, and Joseph Abraham, 65, both full-time evangelical ministers, have launched legal action against West Midlands Police, claiming the officer infringed their right to profess their religion.

Mr Abraham said: "I couldn't believe this was happening in Britain. The Bishop of Rochester was criticised by the Church of England recently when he said there were no-go areas in Britain but he was right; there are certainly no-go areas for Christians who want to share the gospel."

Last night, Christian campaigners described the officer's behaviour as "deeply alarming".

The preachers, both ministers in Birmingham, were handing out leaflets on Alum Rock Road in February when they started talking to four Asian youths.

A police community support officer (PCSO) interrupted the conversation and began questioning the ministers about their beliefs.

They said when the officer realised they were American, although both have lived in Britain for many years, he launched a tirade against President Bush and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Cunningham said: "I told him that this had nothing to do with the gospel we were preaching but he became very aggressive.

"He said we were in a Muslim area and were not allowed to spread our Christian message. He said we were committing a hate crime by telling the youths to leave Islam and said that he was going to take us to the police station."

The preacher refused to give the PCSO his address because he felt the officer's manner was "threatening and intimidating".

The ministers claim he also advised them not to return to the area. As he walked away, the PCSO said: "You have been warned. If you come back here and get beaten up, well you have been warned".

West Midlands Police, who refused to apologise, said the incident had been "fully investigated" and the officer would be given training in understanding hate crime and communication.

British police smash Pakistani iPhone scam after they pocketed £1.2million in July alone

British police have shut down an international scam in which gang members used stolen phones to ring up millions of pounds worth of calls to their own premium phone lines before pocketing the profits.

Nine people were arrested following raids at homes across London, Birmingham and Middlesbrough, and police seized dozens of iPhones, hundreds of Sim cards, bank cards, fake passports and cash.

The raids followed a month-long investigation into a rapidly growing criminal conspiracy profiting from the theft and illegal use of almost 1,000 iPhones.

West African fraudsters allegedly used false identities and fake credit cards to sign up to O2 phone contracts, which gave them iPhone handsets complete with Sim cards.

They then sold the brand new phones to a middleman who removed the Sim cards and unlocked the handsets before selling both to the alleged London and Essex-based crime gang.

The phones and Sim cards were then sent to gang members in the Middle East, Vietnam and Europe, where the handsets were sold off and the Sim cards were used as part of a sophisticated electronic scam.

The gang set up their own premium rate phone lines and plugged the Sim cards into automatic calling devices which continually rang their own lines at a charge of £10 a minute.

A loophole within the phone market means providers are liable for any bills racked up abroad, which they then claim back from the customer.

The gang pocketed £1.2million in July alone, which was paid by O2 to the owners of the premium phone lines - which happened to be the gang.

When O2 went to recoup the bill from the fraudsters who purchased the initial phone contracts, they discovered the accounts had been set up using false identities and the customers did not exist.

Police arrested several members of the premium phone line gang, all of whom are of Pakistani origin, at homes in Forest Gate, Southall and Southend.

They are suspected of setting up a complex network of shell companies to launder the profits from the premium phone lines and hide their identities.

At one home in Forest Gate, police found hundreds of Sim cards, £15,000-worth of iPhones still in their boxes, 20 bank cards and several fake passports.

At another property they also found hundreds of letters that had been prepared to try and con people out of their savings with a promise of a lottery win, a scam known as a 419 con.

Investigators have traced the stolen handsets and Sim cards all over the world, including several countries in the Middle East, continental Europe and Vietnam.

They want to know where the profits went, as many of those involved lived 'under the radar' in council houses with few obvious assets, apart from relatively smart cars.

Detective Superintendent Bob Wishart, of City of London Police, which is the national lead force for fraud, said: 'Today we have struck at the very heart of a highly sophisticated criminal network that has been targeting the telecommunications industry to steal millions of pounds. Our investigation found a crime gathering momentum. Each month more Sim cards were being used to make more phone calls to premium rate lines at more expense to the network provider. The criminal exploitation of the latest consumer technology is a recurring theme of our work. Our collaboration with O2 on this investigation highlights the benefits of how the private sector can work with the police to proactively target common threats to our communities.'

Adrian Goreham, who is responsible for tackling fraud at O2, said: 'This was a sophisticated and organised attempt to defraud mobile phone operators. We are committed to reducing mobile phone crime and have a dedicated team that monitors and investigates such attempted criminal activity.

Those arrested were aged between 18 and 42.

English-speaking pupils now the minority in 1,500 British schools

Children who speak English as their first language are a minority in more than 1,500 schools, official figures have revealed.
They show there has been a sharp rise in the number of schools in England where more than half of pupils have a foreign language as their mother tongue.

The statistics released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families show that in 1997, the year Labour came to power, half the pupils in 866 schools spoke English as a second language.

By last year, this figure had jumped to1,545 - a rise of 78 per cent. It means that more than half the pupils in 1,284 primary schools, 210 secondary schools and 51 special schools across England now come from a non-English speaking background.

Around one in seven - almost 500,000 - primary pupils and just over one in ten, or 364,000, secondary students do not speak English as their first language.

Critics said last night that the figures were another sign of the impact of Labour's open door on immigration and that they risked hampering integration.

They also claimed that the data has serious implications for already-stretched school resources.

The statistics also reveal that the impact of immigration has not been spread evenly across the country. London - often the first point of call for immigrants - has been the hardest hit.

Birmingham has 116 schools where more than 50 per cent of pupils have English as a second language, while in Bradford the figure is 60, in Leicester 34, Manchester 33, Lancashire 30, and Kirklees 30.

RAILWAY police are hunting a gang of thugs who told three teenagers: “Lick our boots” during a 30-minute terror journey into Birmingham.

Officers said the boys – two 16-year-olds and another aged 17 – were also threatened with violence and suffered a “humiliating and degrading” ordeal at the hands of the gang.

British Transport Police today released CCTV images of eight people, including a girl, they want to trace in connection with the incident.

It happened when the louts boarded the New Street-bound train at Blake Street Station, near Sutton Coldfield.

Det Con Tim Friend, from British Transport Police, described the ordeal as “degrading bullying” and appealed for help to find the culprits.

“A group of between eight and ten Asian males and females bullied the lads for the whole of the 30-minute journey,” he said.

“They were told ‘kiss our feet’ and anyone who said no was threatened with violence. It was pretty unpleasant.”

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “We are seeking to identify the individuals pictured who we would like to speak to in connection with a robbery on a train service between Blake Street and New Street stations.

“Three young males were subjected to a protracted ordeal of bullying before having property stolen under threat of further violence.”

The victims were heading into the city for a concert on board a train that left Lichfield City station at 5.50pm on November 9 last year.

Police said the ordeal lasted until the train arrived at New Street.

The frightened lads were eventually robbed of their mobile phones, cash, train tickets and one had a concert ticket stolen.

Their assailants were seen giggling and joking with each other as they left the train.

The victims raised the alarm shortly after the train arrived in Birmingham, telling police the torment left them feeling “humiliated and degraded”.

Police checked CCTV footage from the station and Pallasades shopping centre to catch the culprits.

Detectives are now appealing to Birmingham Mail readers to help identify a group of people they want to speak to in connection with the incident after their own investigations drew a blank.

Looking through todays newspapers I came across a letter to the Birmingham Post from a disgruntled UAF protester.

Here it is:

Dear Editor,

I would like to start by apologising to the people of Birmingham for the events of Saturday evening which I am highly ashamed to have been a part of. However, as a moderate who took part in the UAF protest I would like to set the record straight.

I, like the vast majority of people in Birmingham love the fact that our city is so diverse and vibrant. I felt that this was worth defending, especially from a bunch of trouble makers many of whom were from outside the city.

Unfortunately it turned out the UAF were no more interested in our community than the racists many of us turned out to oppose!

The young Muslims who rampaged through the city streets were incited to violence by UAF activists. I was near the front of the rally in Rotunda Square and I saw how they worked and I saw how it got out of hand.

The UAF should have switched rhetoric when they saw that the young Muslims were getting restless and angry. Instead what they did was get increasingly aggressive speakers to talk about ‘smashing the BNP’ (who not directly involved with the protest) whilst sending agitators into the crowd, with megaphones, to whip up anger there.

Only a few members of the Socialist Workers party, some trade unionists and a few moderate Muslim blokes who had been recruited as marshals on the day, remained to help the Police calm the riot.

I would like to commend the West Midlands Police Force for their sensitive handling of the protest and us protesters during what was a very difficult situation.
However, the ten or so members of the Muslim community who stayed with the protest whilst it was settled are the true unsung heroes of the sad event.

I never got to know their names, however, I am very proud to have worked with them in defusing the tensions that built up between rioters and Police. A true example of why our city is great.

As to the UAF well, I don’t mind announcing that I will never join one of their protests again. Once again I can only say how sorry I am that it all got so out of hand. If we had known how it would turn out then I’m sure a lot of protesters would have stayed home.

The UAF has achieved nothing except to create racial tensions were non existed before.

This young lad, who was nothing to do with the BDL protest against muslim extremism, was not part of the protest.

Here's a statement from someone who was in Birmingham on Saturday:

'as far as i’m aware the story behind this guy is that two people said to each other “lets rob him” and because they started hitting him the rest of the crowd, already wound p from the drunk guy gobbing off from earlier all pounced on him with at least 10 or 15 people kicking this guy on the ground. don’t think he was EDL but can’t confirm. However 20 yards behind this incident was a line of riot police guarding one street who not only failed to react to the violence but who stood idle and bloody useless as people were shouting for their help'

'The majority of the people who were attacked were random passers by. The [EDL] had long gone by then. If you were a White male passing by the crowd you were going to get a kicking. There was even a foreign White guy who made the mistake of taking pictures of what was going on and he was attacked in front of his young baby who was left unprotected in its pram. Granted the majority of the attacks were not as brutal as the pictures on the Daily Mail Website but i still don’t think it should have happened. Ironically the UAF scarpered when they saw what was beginning to happen with the ethnic minority youths attacking innocent White passers by (not saying that a few of the people who were set upon weren’t inciting the minorities
because they were, but the vast majority just made the mistake of being in the wrong place at the wrong time) so it seems that the UAF only protest against racism when it is White racism directed towards ethnic minorities, not when it is the other way
around.'

And now from an article on the British Defence League blog:

'Some 2000 muslems and left wing police haters were on the streets, and spent the day attacking lone whites, and small groups, most of whom were nothing to do with our protest. Our main group were NOT attacked, as they were surrounded by police, but the police turned a lot of our supporters back on the trains, or sent them away, preventing a lot from reaching the protest, and standing by while some were attacked. This just serves to demonstrate how bad this country has got, when Islamic and left wing mobs are allowed to run around attacking people, while any attempt to
protest against the state of affairs this country is in by normal people is met with police harrassment and arrests.

Innocent people with their kids leaving football matches were also attacked by Muslems, which is a disgrace. Will these thugs faces be plastered all over the papers asking for info like they do with football hooligans? Dont hold your breath. All in all it was a success, and if everyone had been able to get there we would have had around
500. Next time will be bigger now, thanks to the photos of the disgusting attacks on British people trying to speak up against extremists and their supporters.

The British Defence League have announced that the Birmingham demonstration set for Saturday 8th of August is to go ahead despite police harassment and raids on activists.

Demonstrators are to meet at the Bullring and march to the council offices to show disgust at the way extremists are allowed to harrass and insult our soldiers.

This is to be a peaceful demonstration and everyone is welcome regardless of colour or creed.

Let's show the lunatics in charge that we will NOT stand by and watch our country being dragged into the gutter by extremist muslims and their sympathisers.

Anti-muslim Protest in Birmingham 4th July 2009

As I reported earlier an anti-muslim demonstration was to take place in Birmingham on July 4th. The demonstration was organised by the English Defence League. The EDL joined forces with the Welsh Defence League (WDL) in order to show muslims and the Government that the people of Great Britain will no longer tolerate islamic hatred in our Countries.

This demo has not been mentioned anywhere in the media. Why not? Are they afraid that the people of Britain will see what is happening and want to join in?
